Dopo lo scioglimento dei Ramones, Joey intraprese la carriera solista, registrando sia l'album Don't Worry About Me, il quale contiene pezzi originali e due cover: 1969 degli Stooges e una versione punk di What a Wonderful World di Louis Armstrong, e sia l'EP Christmas Spirit...In My House.

Il 19 maggio, il giorno che avrebbe dovuto essere il suo 50esimo compleanno, viene proclamato "Joey Ramone Day", in suo onore. Dal 2001 si tiene annualmente il Joey Ramone Birthday Bash dove per l'occasione vengono suonati dei classici dei Ramones.

La musica è arte, per me deve essere libera come l'aria, è di tutti è del popolo della massa e non si può contenere e lo dimostra la storia. Sono dell'idea che la musica deve circolare liberamente anche di qualità audio peggiore all'originale (ma non troppo:), l'artista ci guadagna facendosi conoscere e suonando sul palco dove emerge quello che vale, mentre l'industria del disco si deve adeguare ai tempi che cambiano..
